The guest of honour was Dr Eva Schloss, an 87-year-old Auschwitz survivor, who saw the horse chestnut as “a symbol of hope”. It had a small plaque explaining that the tree had been planted “in the hope that the young people of Islington will live in a society of mutual understanding and respect for diversity”.
